Simple Steps to Writing Your Own Vows

READ & COMMUNICATE

Reading other people’s vows can help inspire you and give you an idea of what material you want to cover in your own vows. Communicate with your partner on expectations, length of vows, style (format), etc. You want to both be on the same page.

SHARE YOUR RELATIONSHIP & HEART

You want your vows to be genuine and vulnerable and not sound like you copied them from your favorite romance movie. Share as you feel comfortable!

Some prompts to get you thinking:

  • How I felt when we met

  • When I knew you were the one

  • What I love about you

  • What I see in our future

  • What makes us laugh, tick, thrive

  • Five things I promise

DON’T GET TOO PERSONAL OR TOO LENGTHY

Remember that you will be reading these in front of your friends and family. Some things should be kept between the two of you. Keep it 3-5 mins if possible.

EDIT & PRACTICE

Edit before writing and printing a final draft. You want to be very familiar and comfortable with your vows by the time you are reading them in front of everyone. Read them to your Maid of Honor or Best Man to make sure they sound natural.

BE YOU

At the end of the day… These are your vows and your relationship. Do what fits you and your partner

GOOD LUCK!
